An Apple Watch with a blank screen is not enough evidence to identify a failed battery or motherboard. Work through a few basic charging checks, then record what happens. That information is more useful for a repair enquiry than repeatedly attempting different fixes.
Check the charging setup
Apple recommends checking the compatible charging cable, power adapter and magnetic alignment. The watch back and charger should be clean, with packaging removed. A deeply discharged watch can need up to 30 minutes on the charger before it responds. A different compatible charger and adapter can help isolate the accessories.

Describe the symptom precisely
Note whether you see a red bolt, a charging symbol, an Apple logo or nothing at all. Also note whether it vibrates or makes sounds despite the blank display. These observations do not prove a particular fault, but they help distinguish the next diagnostic questions.
- Watch series and case size.
- When it last worked normally.
- Whether it failed suddenly or after gradually shorter battery life.
- Which charger and adapter you tested.
- Any previous screen or battery work.
When to stop home checks
If compatible charging and the appropriate restart procedure produce no improvement, arrange assessment. Do not pry the screen open or buy a replacement battery solely because the display stays black. A shop should explain the diagnosis before recommending a part.
Questions for the repair quotation
Ask whether the quotation is for diagnosis or an identified repair, which components it covers and what happens if the repair is unsuccessful. Confirm the expected time, warranty and any effect on stored settings or data. Describe any priorities before work starts.
