Preparing Your Phone for the Rainy Season

Practical ways to protect your phone, cables and data during wet weather, plus what to avoid after a liquid alert.

Preparing your phone for rainy weather starts before you leave home: keep it somewhere dry, protect your charging accessories and make sure important information is backed up. A few simple habits are more useful than relying on a case to handle every accident.

Pack for the journey

Choose a closed inner compartment instead of an open bag pocket. If you use a protective pouch, check its closure and fit before carrying the phone in it. Keep cables and power banks in a separate dry compartment so a wet umbrella or jacket does not soak the connectors.

Set up your route or necessary details under shelter before starting a journey. If you need to check the screen again, stop somewhere dry. This reduces the need to handle the phone in the rain or with wet hands.

Keep a usable backup

Check when your last backup completed rather than assuming it is current. Make sure you know how to access important contacts and account recovery information from another device. A backup plan is useful even when the phone appears to be working normally.

If a liquid-detection alert appears

For a supported iPhone, Apple's guidance is to disconnect the cable and allow both the connector and cable to dry before reconnecting. Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow. Do not use rice, external heat or compressed air, and do not push objects into the port. Drying can take longer than a few minutes; follow the instructions for your exact device.

Read Apple's liquid-detection guidance for the supported models and detailed steps. For another brand, use that manufacturer's instructions instead of assuming the same procedure applies.

Do not turn prevention into a repair attempt

A dry-looking exterior does not establish the condition of internal components. Avoid opening the device or repeatedly trying accessories to see whether it has recovered. Record any alert and arrange advice through the device manufacturer's support channel if the problem persists.

A quick pre-departure check

  • Phone and accessories packed away from wet items.
  • Pouch or bag closure checked.
  • Recent backup confirmed.
  • Important travel details available without prolonged outdoor use.
